Tripletails received their name due to their three-tailed appearance, a consequence of enlarged lobes on the posterior fins. Juveniles are known to turn sideways in the water to mimic floating leaves which may be a means of protective camouflage. This behavior is often misinterpreted as the fish being deceased.
